Ali Mondo in Mombasa, Kenya

Ali Mondo organised a malaria awareness event in Lunga Lunga near Mombasa in Kenya. He invited members of the South Coast Council of Imams and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to take part and put together a power point presentation on how malaria affects his local community.

By explaining the devastating effects that malaria has on the Mombasa locality, as well as Kenya more generally, Ali was able to highlight why prevention of malaria should be a priority for local people and the Kenyan government.

He explained how local residents could protect themselves from mosquitoes biting at night and encouraged the religious leaders present to pass on the information they had received to their congregations. Dissipating information in this way is often the easiest way of getting information on malaria prevention to rural communities that do not have easy access to a health care centre. Ali has shown that anyone can encourage religious leaders to teach their communities about malaria and by doing so he has helped eliminate deaths from malaria.
